I met up with my running friend and drove to Greer, SC today for their annual half marathon run. Im guessing that there were over 500 total runners for the 1/2 and the 5k. Every volunteer that I encountered was very helpful and friendly.
The race started after the singing of the national anthem (which was a nice touch) close to the middle of downtown. The race began around 8 with a "on your mark, get set, go!" and we were off. The first mile snaked through a lot of small mill type neighborhoods which made for some close contact with other runners. I never mind this type of start since I am warming up slow anyway. Besides, if you were looking to take off fast you could have easily started at the front.
I took the race with a real easy pace knowing in the back on my mind that the 34 mile Buncome trail run is comming up in eight days. It was hot on the blacktop. Somewhere in the high 80's I would guess - maybe even 90 near the end. I did about a mile of walking and still finished around 2:13. At the end of the race they handed out nice square gold medals, cool looking cotton T-shirts and had a good selection of food/drinks to choose from.
Overall it was a fun race. I talked to several nice people along the course. One guy suggested running the Memphis marathon. Another lady suggested icing your legs after long runs by standing up up in a trash can of ice water. That way you don't have to put the family jewels down into the water!
I hope to be able to run this one again. As always the volunteers made for a wonderful race and I would like to say "Thanks!" again to all of you.
